The Spirit of Soulmates

A group of musical masterminds and frontmen of bands like: Jethro Tull, Cream, Toto, Blood Sweat & Tears, Manfred Mann´s Earth Band, Emerson Lake & Palmer, Cutting Crew and many more… 40 years ago, the young hungarian born musician and songwriter Leslie Mandoki was one of the leading voices of the anti-sovjet student opposition in his country. After several arrests he managed to escape communism and the iron curtain through a tunnel. Mandoki decided to stay in Germany and became a successful musician. Over the years he collected countless platinum album awards and became one of Europe’s most influential music producer with a major recording studio complex. He´s delivering to the entertainment industry every and each year an outstanding production reaching the top. Back in 1975 as a refugee he was asked by an officer in the German refugee camp about his future plans. Leslie replayed that his goal was to play music with his great musical “idols” and named Ian Anderson from Jethro Tull, Jack Bruce from Cream and also the young and ambitious Al di Meola. He wasn´t taken serious by the officer back then, but his musical vision was filed with correct German precision at the refugee camp. In 1992, Ian Anderson, Jack Bruce and Al Di Meola became founding members of Leslie Mandoki’s band project Man Doki Soulmates – which is now 23 years old! For more than 2 decades Leslie Mandoki unites legendary icons of anglo-american rock and jazz-rock in his band “Soulmates”.

Our Soulmates

They’re all playing together in ONE band with remarkable lineups including singers & players like Ian Anderson, Jack Bruce, David Clayton-Thomas, Chaka Khan, Chris Thompson, Bobby Kimball and Steve Lukather, Nick van Eede, Eric Burdon, Nik Kershaw, Greg Lake, Al di Meola, Randy and Michael Brecker, Bill Evans, John Helliwell, Mike Stern, Anthony Jackson, Victor Bailey, Pino Palladino, Paul Carrack, Peter Frampton and Jon Lord.

All together the Soulmates recorded five studio albums with new original music in English language in Leslie Mandoki’s studios at Lake Starnberg in Bavaria near by Munich. Almost every song is written by Mandoki, some songs by other members like Nik Kershaw or Ian Anderson. Furthermore there are three more extra album releases featuring the artistic diversity of the “band”. Two of them are so-called “Jazz cuts”, including extended versions of the original songs with more focus on instrumental improvisations and solos as well as some special live recordings. The third derivative is a complete instrumental adaption of the original album “Soulmates” played by string quartet only.

There are also two specials:

The album “Thank You”, contains a “best of” collection of “radio versions” of Soulmates originals. The “classix” rock album “Legends Of Rock” including live versions of famous classic hits of the members of the band recorded for the big two-part live tv-show with more than 10 million viewers celebrating “50 years of rock” and the rehearsals in the studio. Imagine listening to songs like “Smoke On the Water” sung by Bobby Kimball and Chris Thompson, with Ian Anderson on flute, Jack Bruce on bass, Peter Frampton on guitar and Deep Purple legend Jon Lord on Hammond or the great classic “Sunshine of your Love” of Jack Bruce in the same lineup. And finally, there are two DVD productions with lots of “making of” material as well as live concerts. One contains mainly acoustic concert formats and the second one is a double DVD of the 20th anniversary concert of Man Doki Soulmates in the Budapest opera house in 2013 with an incredible lineup performing 4 hours with the best soulmates songs as well as greatest hits of the band members – a TOP10 DVD success in Germany which was also released as a special set of three audioCDs.
